The Community Outreach program of the Phoenix Art Museum provides presentations and discussion of various Art topics. Topics will be presented on a variety of subjects including Asian Art, Art of the American West, Fashion and presentations focusing on individual artists. The presentations explore themes related to the Museum’s collection of more than 20,000 artworks from around the world, creating opportunities for interaction and engagement.

In our lifetimes we have experienced so many advances in science. We have heart transplants, self-driving cars, and the internet, just to name a few. Science has also had an impact on art. Join us as we explore pieces from the Phoenix Art Museum collection and discover how science, technology, and math have inspired artists, both past and present, to explore new ideas, new materials, and to solve problems.

Andy Warhol said, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Is fame fickle? Consider the careers of Taylor Swift, Lady Di, Elvis Presley, and so many others. Artemisia Gentileschi knew what it was like to be famous, because she was famous in her lifetime. But she is not so famous these days. She is indisputably the greatest female artist of the Baroque Era, and some consider her to be one of the greats of all time. Let’s spend some time exploring her achievements.

What is “Mexicanidad ”? Come, find out! Learn how Mexicanidad influenced the portrayal of women, indigenous people, and culture in Mexico’s art of the 20th century. Along the way, we will meet strong women, members of Mexico’s working class, and
mingle in the music and culture of a country with rich historical traditions. See what led to a shift to Mexican scenes and Mexican life as worthy subjects for art.
