Record Your Life through a Sketchbook Journal

Rhonda Roebuck, an artist I met at the Red Thread Retreat,  will be teaching this workshop She has been keeping journals for more than 25 years and enjoys sharing this idea with other people.  The workshop will be a non-threatening environment where you can experiment and see lots of ideas on how to keep a journal.  We will work with various media and try all kinds of techniques.  Come join in a fun day thinking about your life and what you might like to record in a journal.

In this workshop, we will work on various ideas for recording your everyday life.  You will see how much fun it can be to take a look at everything around you. You don’t have to have drawing or writing skills, you just have to be willing to try anything!  We will record
places, food, clothes, and how you might turn that info into an interesting page.  Why would we want to do this?  If you were able to look at a journal/sketchbook that was kept by a family member in the past, would you be interested?  Of course, you would!   I believe someone, someday will want to know what your little life was like in 2019!  So join me for a day of recording your life.

I will provide materials for you to get started, but if you would like to bring
things you already have, here are some suggestions:

A journal:  I like journals with pages that are heavy enough to take a little water and watercolor.  My favorites are Moleskine Sketchbook (approx. 5 x 7, has to be Moleskine Sketchbook for heavier paper); Stillman & Birn Zeta series (8.5 x 11, this is very heavy paper because I like to paint in this journal, there are some not so heavy that would work fine).  Certainly, there are many others that will work fine…use what you have!

Pens:  Micron pens are great because they are waterproof and you can paint over.  I
also use fountain pens, ballpoints, and some markers.   Some pens are waterproof and some are not, both are fun to try.

Colored pencils:  I will have some for you to try.  If you want to buy some, the best
brands are Prismacolor and Faber Castell Polychromes.  These are great for using on thinner paper in journals.

Watercolor pencils:  Again, I will have some you can try.

Pencils:  Mechanical pencils are great, or drawing pencils like 2B or HB are good.

Watercolors:  If you have your own palette and brush, bring those along.

Remember, you don’t have to bring anything but your journal.  I will have supplies.
