In this handbuilding class for students of all levels, we will be exploring basic construction techniques along with ways of combining them. You’ll build and expand your visual vocabulary as we dive into both functional and sculptural projects, utilizing pinching, coiling, and slab. This class invites you to experiment and relish in the intermingling between methods, blurring the boundaries between art and craft, vessel and sculpture, self and material. You will also be guided in surface investigations including sgraffito, wax resist, and a variety of ways to create and highlight texture in addition to basic glazing. Class demonstrations and discussions will move towards a consideration of form and surface holistically to elevate the success of your work. Ample guidance for class projects will be provided, adapting them to any skill level, along with support for independent explorations.
