Vitality Arts Urban Sketching 8 Week Course Spring 2025

Ages: geared for older adults ages 55+, but any adult can register

Cost: $170 (This class is made possible at a subsidized rate by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.)

Welcome to Urban Sketching, where we will see the world around us in a different way – Just you and a sketchbook. We will cover topics of – perspective, color mixing, composition, quick drawing, and pen and ink.  Can’t draw a straight line? No worries. Urban Sketching is about the informality of it. Urban Sketching is different from Studio drawing. It’s more about your connection with the environment that you’re in at a certain time and place. You will learn to capture the essence of your experience with the use of spontaneous lines and color. You will record your experiences in your own journals to immerse yourself in the moment to better experience the excitement of what you saw.

The first 4 weeks of this class will be going over the basics and different techniques of sketching. Then the 2nd 4 weeks of class we will be going to locations to sketch from real life. Of course, weather permitting. Otherwise we will use reference materials supplied by your instructor or bring your own favorite photographs.
