Learn how to capture the human figure from life through observational drawing and anatomical guidance. We will explore landmarks of the human body, rhythms of the bones and muscles, and how to better understand the physics of the figure. At the end of this course, students will feel confident in their gesture drawing capabilities, and have a deeper knowledge of the art of the human body to bring into their own figure drawing practice.
Starting off each class with an anatomy lesson and how to use that knowledge while observing the figure, we have a model available to draw from for our gesture drawings, anatomical studies, and long drawings. Students will then draw from observations from our model with instructor guidance.
Week 1
First we will explore capturing the figure through gesture drawing, observing the line of action and reducing the figure to simple shapes. Review “S” curves and “C” curves.
Week 2
Discussion of the skeleton’s major landmarks, and reviewing the eight parts of the body in their simplified shapes.
Week 3
We will further review general proportions of the body, as well as a brief review of facial proportions.
Week 4
Gesture shapes and behavior of the neck and upper torso. Practicing the simplified anatomy of these areas through observational drawing of our model.
Week 5
Gesture shapes and behavior of the arms and legs. Practicing the simplified anatomy of these areas through observational drawing of our model.
Week 6
Gesture shapes and behavior of the hands and feet. Practicing the simplified anatomy of these areas through observational drawing of our model.
Week 7
Reviewing foreshortening of the body with what we learned about each area of the figure, using overlap, volume, and perspective.
Week 8
Demonstration of gesture shading and simplified rendering of the figure forms we learned during this course.
