Description:
Learn to throw clay on the pottery wheel and make your own pottery pieces in this 4-week class for beginners! The class will be great for anyone new to clay or anyone who has thrown before and just wants some guidance.
Local potter, Amanda Proctor will instruct the class. She will show participants how to perform the basic steps involved when making a piece of pottery on the wheel. You will learn how to glaze the pieces that you create and you will take the finished pieces home after the firing is complete.
Class 1: The instructor will guide you on operation of the wheel and proper wheel posture. She will go over the necessary steps for making a pottery cylinder, These steps include, centering, opening, pulling and removing your piece from the wheel.
Class 2: You will trim the pieces that you created in Class 1. You will work on finishing your pieces and preparing them for the bisque kiln. You will continue throwing on the wheel, while you review what you have learned.
Class 3: In this class you will learn about glazing techniques. You will brush glaze your bisque pieces.
After glazing you will trim the pieces created in Class 2. You will then finish all wet clay work.
Class 4: You will glaze your pieces created during Class 2. Class will end with a group discussion/review.
What to bring: All supplies are provided by the studio. Clay, glaze, use of our professional level pottery wheels and use of pottery tools are included with the cost of registration. Please come wearing clothing that can stand up to clay splatter. We provide the use of aprons, and towels, but please keep in mind, wheel throwing is messy. You may want to bring a change of clothes if you are going somewhere after class.
How to Prepare: It is recommended that you trim your nails so they are short prior to class. The pottery wheel is difficult to master with long nails as they will catch on your clay and can be a safety concern.
Need more info: If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at the studio and we will be happy to answer any questions.
