Meet Your Sewing Machine is not an intro-to-sewing class. Instead, we'll focus on understanding how your domestic sewing machine works and how to keep it running smoothly so you can sew with more confidence at home.
During class, you’ll learn:
- How to properly thread your specific machine
- How to wind and insert a bobbin on your machine
- How to change a needle on your machine
- What the common machine settings and controls do
- Basic cleaning and oiling to maintain your machine
- How to troubleshoot common machine issues
What to Bring: Your own domestic sewing machine and its accessories (power cord, foot pedal, bobbins, needles, manual if you have it)
This class is ideal if you’ve sewn before but your machine has been sitting in the closet for a while, or if you’ve recently inherited, purchased, or been gifted a machine and want to feel comfortable using it again. We're excited to help you dust off your machine and get back into sewing!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the minimum age? This is an adults class for 18+ attendees. 16 & 17 year olds may attend with parent permission - please reach out to hello@unfoldden.com before signing up.
Q: What materials do I need to bring? Please bring your own sewing machine. If you don't have a sewing machine, we recommend signing up for our First Stitch: Try It Out or Intro to Sewing class before purchasing one!
Q: What kind of sewing machine can I bring? We're equipped to help you with any machine from the last 30 years - as long as it's in working order. We ask that you provide the make and model when you register so we can make sure that your machine is one that we can help with!
Sewing Machine Make (eg. brand): Singer, Pfaff, Bernina, Husqvarna, Janome, Brother, etc.
Sewing Machine Model (eg. model number) - 4411 Heavy Duty, Innovis-NS80e, B480
Please make sure you also bring:
- Your machine's plug and pedal
- Your machine's manual, if you still have it
- Fresh sewing needles (if you don't know how to replace your needle, bring a pack and we can help!)
This class is not designed for Singer Featherweight machines, treadle sewing machines, industrial sewing machines, vintage sewing machines or toy/play machines. Personal sewing machines that are in working order enable us to provide a high quality learning and sewing experience for everyone in class. If your machine needs to be serviced, we reserve the right to ask you to use one of our class machines and are happy to provide service technician recommendations. If you have questions about whether this class would be a good fit for you and your machine, please send a photo of your machine to hello@unfoldden.com.
Q: If I don’t know how to sew, can I come to this class? This is a Confident Beginner-level class, meaning we expect you to already know how to sew with a sewing machine - you might just be a little rusty or need some help getting set up with a new machine. For our absolute beginners, without any sewing machine experience, we recommend attending our Intro to Sewing course before signing up for this class.
Q: How long is the class? This class is a single night workshop from 5-8PM, with breaks provided as needed. As this class takes place in the evening, you are welcome to bring your own snacks and food with you. We have a water refill station, microwave and small refrigerator available for use as well.
Q: How many people are in the class? We have a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 6 students per class. Please note sign ups for this class end 2 hours before the first session, in order to give our teachers enough time to prep materials for each student.
Q: Are sewing machines provided? Yes! Sewing machines are provided for all students, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Please see our note above about sewing machine age and functionality.
