Art Mentorship Program

Art teaches life skills such as critical and visual thinking, time management, self-reflection, and pursuing lifelong learning. The Art Mentorship program will aid in the development of these life skills by providing an art mentor who can guide a student's artistic development into individualized steps in their personal artwork.

The program will consist of 5 weeks of mentorship, providing individualized and engaged steps for the student's success in their artistic vision and development. These classes will be limited to up to 6 students ages 11+. Each class will be 1.5 hours.

How it works:

  • Students will choose their media from drawing, painting, printmaking or sculpture.
  • Students will have access to the Art Factory's art supplies to use during classes.
  • The art mentor will give each student individualized steps and goals to complete each week towards achieving desired artistic vision.
  • Students will be asked each week to reflect and share their progress with the class.
  • The art mentor will also partner with students in sharing the progress of their current artwork.
  • The last week of the program will culminate to students having an art show where family and friends are welcome to attend.

About the Art Mentor - Kerry Christman
Miss Kerry Christman has always been curious about the natural world and loves learning new forms of visual art — that is why she became an art teacher. She believes that artmaking helps one become a lifelong learner. As a result, Miss Christman shares this belief with her art students, helping them connect their artmaking to their experiences, and surroundings.

Her journey to teaching visual art began at Gordon College where she earned
her Bachelors of Art. At Gordon College, Miss Christman established her artistic skills by exposing herself to a variety of media including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Her undergraduate experience at Gordon College helped form her interdisciplinary approach to art which fueled her passion to teach and pursue her Masters of Art Education at Virginia Commonwealth University.

In addition to teaching, one of Miss Christman’s hobbies is kayaking. She also
loves walking her dogs and spending time with her nephews.
