Kari Waltz will demonstrate each morning, and then you will have the rest of the day to work on your own painting/s while she is available to help and make suggestions. She'll help you explore pastels techniques, learn how to incorporate underpaintings, simplify compositions, and choose colors to establish depth. This is a two day (Friday/Saturday) workshop, February 21-22, 9:00-4:00, located at Sharmila Dey's studio, 104 Forest Place, Forsyth, GA. Bring a sack lunch each day and snacks if desired.
This is currently set up as a private workshop and will be open to the public at a later date if the spaces have not filled. Access is only through the email/text link at this time.
Suggested Supplies:
- Pastels - a basic set that includes a variety of colors and values
- Nupastels - harder smaller pastel sticks - 24 set recommended
- Rubbing Alcohol and small container
- Old paint brush to use with the alcohol to establish an underpainting (the size you would be comfortable painting with oils or acrylics)
- UArt 400 grit pastel paper (have to get this online) or pastel boards. I will also show you some homemade boards. If you want to just practice, pick up sandpaper of 400 or finer grit at the local hardware store. 5x7, 8x10, 9 x12 or 11x14 Keeping it small will allow you to do several and get more comfortable with the process.
- Support board if using paper
- Tape for board
- Sketchbook or index cards for notetaking and thumbnail sketches
- Pen or pencil for notes and sketches
- Camera or phone - to take black and white photos for comparison (optional)
- Photo references - you are welcome to borrow some of mine, but I would like you to try to paint something different from my demo, just use the same method. Note: I will probably use references from the coast since I will be plein air painting there in March and could use the practice. I will email my choices before the workshop, but interesting skies are some of my favorite.
- Wet-Ones or Baby Wipes to clean hands
- Towel for table to absorb dust
- Some way to carry your work - can put it between sheets in a tracing paper pad, carefully slide them in sheet protectors, cover with glassine paper (online).
Table easels will be provided, but if you want to stand when you paint, please bring your own set-up.
As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.
