Learn how to capture a person’s likeness with charcoal in this 8 week drawing course! Observe instructor demonstrations, experiment with different materials and techniques, and expand your skill set in creating portrait drawings. At the end of this course, students will have intermediate knowledge and practice around drawing the human face in charcoal.
We will explore sketching using grid guides to capture proportions, how and when to use different types of charcoal, blending techniques, and rendering with value. Classes begin with explanations of these topics followed by live demonstrations of material use, mark making, measuring proportions, and fine tuning details. Students will then draw and practice techniques with instructor guidance.
Emily has been capturing portraits in charcoal since middle school, when she realized she had a deep love for bringing people to life in pigment. Come to this class with any questions or topics you’d like to discuss regarding charcoal portraiture, and more importantly, get ready to have fun drawing!
