Learn the basics of making wheel-thrown, Raku-fired vases in this 2-session class. Heatherly Day will assist you with throwing vases on the wheel during the first session, with special consideration for the needs of pieces that will go through Raku firing. Then, in the second session, you will assist the instructors with Raku firing your pieces.
Note: This is not a beginner class. You must already have a solid grasp of wheel-throwing skills to take this class, and you may not take this class unless you have at least completed an 8-week wheel class.
The cost is $180 for non-members, $150 for members, and includes the Raku clay, Raku glazes, other materials and firing. Throwing will take place on February 9, 6:30-8:30 pm. The Raku firing will be on February 21, 12-3 pm. Glazing can be completed on your own time (if a pottery studio member), or on the firing day. Ages 18 & up
Note: the final class session will take place outdoors, and a lot of standing is required. The Raku kiln and fired pottery can get quite hot. For safety, we recommend closed-toed shoes and no synthetic clothing during the final class session. There is always a chance of breakage with Raku firing, and there is no guarantee that all of your pieces will survive the firing.
