Jazz ensemble performance and discussion with musician and educator Mark Hunsberger.
This “annotated” musical performance in the gallery will be presented by Mark Hunsberger and a small Jazz ensemble. Hunsberger, who will also be playing rhythm in the ensemble, will provide educational interpretation during the performance. Music selections will incorporate improvisation and 20th Century Jazz compositions performed globally during and after both World Wars. Discussion will provide a music historical perspective of the time period, focusing on the experience of Black American Jazz musicians who found respite in Europe from racist tensions in America. SAM staff will be available to make clear connections to the artworks on view.
