ABOUT FOLADE:
Folade aka Taji Maalik is a second-generation musician and multi-percussionist who has dedicated himself to the art of music for over 30 years. At a young age, he developed a passion for working with the youth in his community in New York City, which later crystalized and expanded in Minnesota through the arts. Training in the art of music, he pursued his interests further by obtaining a degree in Child Development. As an educator, he shares and directs this passion through Drums Are Life, an organization with a long history of providing programming to youth and adults in the community through cultural awareness, music, song, and dance from around the world. In addition to his work with children, Folade has extensive experience engaging and inspiring senior populations. He has facilitated drumming, rhythm, and cultural programming in Assisted Living Homes, Skilled Nursing Facilities, and Assisted Living Communities in Minnesota and throughout the Greater Phoenix Valley, bringing connection, joy, and wellness through the universal language of rhythm. Folade is currently a teaching artist at Free Arts and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). In addition to teaching at the MIM, he has taught in Saint Paul Public Schools, Minneapolis Public Schools, The Link Minneapolis, The Cultural Wellness Center, the City of Oakland Public Schools, the City of Oakland Parks and Recreation Department, and schools throughout the Phoenix area. As a percussionist, vocalist, and dancer, he has collaborated with artists across the globe. Folade has performed at many national and international venues, including the Jazz Café (London), National Black Theater of Harlem (NYC), International Music & Dance Cultural Tourism Festival (Beijing), and Ethnic Dance Festival (San Francisco), among others. He also served as a musical assistant director at the Riverside Church (NYC). Now residing in Arizona, he continues to provide cultural enrichment, education, and intergenerational engagement through the study of percussion, music, song, and dance of the African Diaspora.
