Homeschool Beginner Wheel Throwing Pottery 8 Week Course Fall 2024

Ages: kids 10 - 17
Date: Wednesdays 10/2 - 11/20
Time: 1pm - 3pm
Cost: $170 (This class is made possible at a subsidized rate by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.)
Location: Rumriver Art Center (wheel studio suite 102)
Teacher: Mak Koep

In this class, students will learn the basic wheel throwing techniques. Each class meets once a week for 2 hours to teach the basics of wheel thrown pottery: wedging, centering, pulling, trimming, glazing, and basic studio etiquette.
Please bring a towel to wipe your hands and wear an apron/clothes you can get dirty (clay does wash out).
Part of the process in wheel throwing is basic studio etiquette. Your class time includes not only throwing, but also cleaning your wheel and surrounding floor area and clay tools that were used. Clay is messy - leave your watches and rings at home.  A clean studio is a healthy studio as clay dust can build up.

For kiddos to explore freely, we have a policy that parents aren’t in the classroom. We’ve also found that without guardians in the classroom, students have space to create more organic relationships and connections with others in the class. Parents or guardians may bring their student to the space and help them feel comfortable up to 10 minutes prior to the class start time, then guardians may sit outside of the classroom in our café or common area space. This way they are reachable if something comes up and the student is assured you are close by.
