Vitality Arts Acrylic Painting 8 Week Course Fall 2024

Ages: geared for older adults ages 55+, but any adult can register

Cost: $155 (This class is made possible at a subsidized rate by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.)

Students will be introduced to the world of acrylic painting. Paintings will be done on both paper and stretched canvas, Using the two different substrates, students will understand the different way the acrylic medium behaves on porous vs. less porous surfaces.
Basic color mixing will be taught using primary colors and secondary colors.
Students will learn color value by using a two-color (white, plus another color) palette for an entire painting to understand the idea of creating high contrast for greater visual impact.
Students will also be taught basic composition principles to create interest and focus in their art.
Different techniques will be introduced using a variety of brushes and materials for creating textures and effects easily and effectively.
The instructor will provide the images/ideas for each week, while also allowing freedom of expression and deviation from the main image. The main imagery will be landscapes or seascapes, but students are encouraged to try something different, if so desired, including abstract art. Students will be included in the decision-making process for what images will be used each week.
Emphasis will be on the process of creation, not the resulting painting, to encourage experimentation and creative license.
