Join artist/author/educator Jenny Geuder to get in the spirit of fall by painting this charming Goldfinch on a Sunflower. No artistic previous experience or skills needed - all ages and abilities welcome. This will be a Zoom class where you can create from the comfort of your own home with a minimum amount of materials needed. This class is great for both kids and adults. Make it a family event!
Note: I will be walking you through how to draw this, but if you are feeling self-conscious or dislike drawing, feel free to trace the basics before we start! Painting and drawing are different skills, and that's ok!
The Zoom meeting link will be on the confirmation email sent to your inbox (from Occasion) after you submit this registration form. If you do not receive a confirmation email to your inbox, please email sales@rumriverart.com or call 763-323-8830 and we will email you the meeting link.

Time: 1pm - 3pm
Cost: $25
Ages suggested (but not limited to!) : 12+
Location: Virtual Class
Teacher: Jenny Geuder (read more about the artist, naturalist and author below)
Participants need to gather their own class supplies.
List of suggested materials:
- watercolor paper (9x12 or 11x15), cold press watercolor paper. I love Strathmore 200, 300, or 400 series. But any decent weight paper is great!
- Painter's tape (or masking tape/washi tape)
- pencil
- Watercolor palette (or white ceramic plate)
- Watercolor paint
Yellow (I used Daniela Smith Hansa Yellow and Dandelion paint Deep Yellow)
Orange (W&N orange)
Brown (W&N Burnt Siena and Burnt Umber
Green (W&N Cotman Sap green)
Black (W&N Ivory black)
Light blue/Cerulean (W&N cerulean blue)
- Brushes: a round 6, a round 2. If you have a larger brush for the background it does make it easier, like a 10 or 12. But definitely not necessary.
- cup for water, some paper towel.
Nice but not necessary:
- something to tape your paper to (I use gatorboard, but I've used cardboard, an old cutting board, the back of a clip board, etc.!)
- Dr. Ph Martin's Bleed Proof White (we barely use it! A dot of white tempera or acrylic works too! I just use this a lot on all my paintings, and it lasts forever. So if you do get it, you will love it and use it for more!)
Our artist for this class Jenny deFouw Geuder is also a naturalist and author. Read here about Jenny and her book "Drawn to Birds"
This is the bird book for people who love birds! Naturalist, watercolorist, and award winning-author Jenny deFouw Geuder combines her vast knowledge of birds, wildflowers, and nature with her artistic expertise to create a book like no other. Drawn to Birds presents more than 120 beautiful watercolor paintings, along with Jenny’s fascinating insights–handwritten to add unique appeal to each page.
Drawn to Birds begins with an introduction to bird anatomy, as well as details about nests, eggs, and migration. From there, more than 50 different bird species are showcased, with the watercolors divided into groups like backyard birds, raptors, and wetland birds. As an added bonus, there’s a section dedicated to insects and wildflowers.
You’ll appreciate Jenny’s tips on how to welcome birds to your yard and how to become a naturalist. Being a naturalist is about more than simply stopping to smell the flowers. It’s about observation and making a record. Pause and notice the shapes, colors, and patterns around you. Jenny’s goal is to inspire you to try your own hand at being a naturalist! She also includes step-by-step guides for drawing, painting, and inking your own pictures. Anyone can be an artist. Be brave, try it out, and keep noticing the marvels around you. Extra pages for journaling and sketching make this book a keepsake to cherish forever.
