Join us in a 3 session workshop to learn clay handbuilding techniques, glazing, and raku firing. Raku is a fun and fiery process in the pottery world and great for sporadic color flashing on sculptural forms. No experience required!!
Session one we will be creating in clay. Instructor will demonstrate multiple handbuilding techniques used to create a sculptural human form. Your human form could be a self portrait bust, a hand gesture, a full body form, or any variation of the human form. Students will create either multiple smaller sculptures (up to 3) or one larger one, roughly having sculptures fit in a total 12” x 6” x 9” rectangle per person. This allows all pieces to be fired in the raku kiln during the final session.
Session two will include glazing instructions, proper procedures for a safe firing, and a demonstration of raku firing so we are ready for the firing day! Students will observe firing and glaze their sculptures.
The third session is our fun, fiery, and fantastic firing day!. Take a role in firing your sculpture if feeling comfortable or leave it to the clay technicians. All safety and firing materials will be provided. We will discuss optional materials students can bring for experimentation on sculptures. This class is for kids ages 16 and older and adults. Family and friends are encouraged to join for our second and third session that include firing outdoors to observe the magic!
