The Three-Month Furniture Making Intensive will guide you from basic hand and machine skills to advanced techniques in furniture making. Through a series of demonstrations and exercises, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to build most tables and case pieces. Complete a number of small projects before moving on to building a shaker nightstand and a cabinet on stand.
These major topics are covered throughout the course:
- Tool sharpening (flat-edge tools)
- Hand tools skills and development
- Drafting and project organization
- Joinery (various mortise and tenon & dovetail joints as well as compound joinery)
- Machine room safety, machine set-up and procedures
- Lumber yard trip (measuring for an selecting the correct lumber for a project)
- Turning (spindle and faceplates)
- Veneering
- Case and table construction
- Finishing
Please contact us if you have questions about a particular topic. This class is suitable for beginners to lifelong enthusiastic hobbyists and everyone in-between. For those who wish to apply to one of our Full-Time programs and who don't have much prior woodworking experience, this course provides prerequisite skill-building.

Tools and supplies: Please bring the items on this supply list to the first day of class. Many of the tools and supplies for Continuing Education classes are available for purchase from the NBSS Store by emailing store@nbss.edu. All sales are final and nonrefundable, and orders must be placed at least 7 days before the first day of class.

Refunds/Cancellations/Withdrawals: General CE Class Registration and Cancellation Policies do not apply to the Three-Month Furniture Making Intensive. Deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. NBSS reserves the right to withdraw a student from the class due to attendance or interpersonal issues. Students with five (5) unexcused absences may be withdrawn from the course and refunds will not be issued.
Veterans: Qualifying Veterans may use their post-9/11 GI Bill to cover the tuition for this course. Withdrawal from the course may impact VA housing benefits for those receiving them.
