In this 4-hr class students will use the basic tools of blacksmithing to forge a small blade in the Scandinavian Slojd tradition. We will jump right into basic techniques and a discussion of hammer styles, anvil tooling, and forge types. Depending on weather, class interest, and availability we’ll use a couple of different forges. If you built a Micro Forge, it will be perfect for this class.
To answer the first question, yes, you have to make the knife specified. The idea is to begin to acquire the fundamental skills you need at the forge and anvil. This small project will get you a useful tool and provide a basis for you to build on with bigger and more difficult projects.
Forges, hammers, tongs, and steel will be provided. Closed toed, preferably leather, shoes are required. Synthetic fabrics melt, so cotton, wool, and leather are good choices for outerwear. Gloves are discouraged, we will discuss that as well, but close fitting leather or cotton gloves are acceptable if you must use them. Bring a notebook, pencils, and comfortable safety glasses -- Forge Greensboro has safety glasses if you do not have your own. Refunds will not be given to those who do not adhere to the Forge's safety requirements.
